So you’re exploring Denver, right?
Denver has no shortage of famous attractions, but some of the best experiences in the Mile High City are the ones locals keep to themselves. Beyond the typical tourist spots, you’ll find incredible restaurants, scenic parks, unique experiences, and quick mountain escapes that make Denver such a fun place to live.
As a long time Denver resident, I’ve learned the best spots over the years, and I’m here to share my version of Denver hidden gems!

Hidden Gem Restaurants in Denver
Denver’s food scene has exploded in recent years, but some of the best spots are still neighborhood favorites. Also, in my opinion, I think Denver overall has GREAT food! So many good places to try.
Mizu Izakaya
This cozy Japanese izakaya feels like a hidden gem tucked away in downtown Denver. The menu focuses on small plates, sushi, and Japanese comfort food.
Mizu Izakaya a great place for late-night dining or one of my favorite places in Denver for date night.
Nana’s Dim Sum & Dumplings
One of the best dim sum spots in the city, Nana’s Dim Sum serves handmade dumplings, bao buns, and classic Cantonese dishes in a modern setting.
Call Your Mother Deli
If you’re craving bagels, this colorful deli is one of Denver’s most popular breakfast spots. Expect New York–style bagels with creative sandwich combinations.
Hapa Sushi Grill & Sake Bar
A long-time Denver favorite (and a long-time favorite of mine), Hapa Sushi blends traditional Japanese flavors with creative rolls and a lively atmosphere. It’s a go-to spot for happy hour and casual sushi nights with friends.
What to order:
- the Aspen Roll (MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SUSHI ROLL! Sooooo good)
- sake flights
- spicy tuna crispy rice
Barcelona Wine Bar
While technically a chain (I know, I know), Barcelona Wine Bar is still one of the best spots in Denver for a girls’ night or date night. The Spanish tapas menu and extensive wine list make it perfect for sharing plates and lingering over drinks.
See if they will pour the sangria in your mouth! A crowd favorite 🙂
Le Colonial
Located in Cherry Creek, Le Colonial is a beautiful French-Vietnamese restaurant known for its elegant atmosphere and incredible cocktails. The interior is vibe-y if you’re looking for more of an aesthetic restaurant.
Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant
Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant is a local institution for cheap, incredible breakfast burritos. A classic Denver hidden gem. If you want something that screams Denver local culture, this is it.
Fun and Unique Things to Do in Denver
Looking for fun and unique things to do in Denver beyond the usual tourist attractions? These experiences are favorites among locals.
Explore the World of Meow Wolf Denver: Convergence Station
Part art installation, part interactive experience, Meow Wolf is one of the most unique attractions in Denver.
Inside you’ll find an immersive universe of rooms, hidden passages, and psychedelic art installations.
Local tip: It’s one of the best things to do in Denver on a rainy or snowy day.
Relax at Oakwell Beer Spa
One of Denver’s most unique wellness experiences, Oakwell Beer Spa combines spa treatments with craft beer.

Casa Bonita
A true Denver icon, Casa Bonita is far more than just a restaurant… it’s an experience. There’s no correct was to describe Casa Bonita, but this colorful Mexican-themed landmark is famous for its cliff divers plunging into an indoor lagoon, roaming mariachi bands, arcade games, and a maze of quirky rooms to explore.
Originally opened in 1974 and revived in 2023 by the creators of South Park, Casa Bonita blends nostalgia, entertainment, and improved food into one of the most unique dining spots in the Denver area. If you’re looking for a place that’s equal parts dinner and adventure, this is a must-visit hidden gem!
Play Mini Golf at Holey Moley Golf Club Denver
Holey Moley is a colorful indoor mini golf course with themed holes, cocktails, and a party atmosphere. It’s one of the most fun group activities in downtown Denver.
Brewery Hop Through the River North Art District
The RiNo Art District is Denver’s brewery capital. The neighborhood is packed with local breweries, street art murals, and lively patios.
Even if you’re not a huge beer drinker, the area is worth visiting for the art galleries and restaurants.
Walk Around Sloan’s Lake Park
Sloan’s Lake offers one of the best skyline views in Denver, especially at sunset when the mountains glow behind downtown.
Locals come here to:
- run the lake loop
- watch the sunset
Just FYI: do not go in the water or let your dog in the water as it’s known to have a harmful bacteria!
Best Hikes Near Denver (Local Favorites)
One of the best parts about Denver is how quickly you can escape into the mountains. These hikes are local favorites within a short drive of the city.
Alderfer/Three Sisters Park
Located in Evergreen, this park offers miles of scenic trails through forests and rock formations. It’s a great hike when you want mountain views without the crowds.
Alderfer/Three Sisters is my go-to hike for a not too hard hike that still provides some great views. Easily one of my favorite Denver hidden gems for hikes.
Chautauqua Park
This iconic trailhead leads directly into the famous Flatirons rock formations above Boulder.
Chautauqua is one of the most scenic hikes near Denver and offers incredible views of the city and foothills.
Mount Falcon Park
If you’re looking for great views of Red Rocks and Denver without a long drive, Mount Falcon Park is a quick mountain escape from Denver.
Mount Sanitas Trail
If you’re in Boulder, check out this trail. Mount Sanitas Trail is a favorite local hike with amazing views over Boulder.
Hidden Gems Worth the Short Drive From Denver
Visit the Charming Mountain Town of Golden, Colorado
Just 25 minutes from Denver, Golden is one of the easiest and most charming day trips from the city.
This historic town sits at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and is known for its scenic downtown area along Clear Creek. Locals love spending afternoons here walking along the creek, tubing in the summer, or enjoying a patio drink with mountain views.
While not really one of the Denver hidden gems, Golden is also home to the famous Coors Brewery, where visitors can tour one of the largest breweries in the world.
Drive the Scenic Road to Idaho Springs, Colorado
Located about 40 minutes west of Denver, Idaho Springs is a historic mining town surrounded by rugged mountain scenery.
It’s a great stop if you’re heading deeper into the Rockies, but it’s also worth visiting on its own. Walk around the small downtown area, grab lunch, and soak in the mountain-town atmosphere.
For a relaxing experience after hiking or skiing, many visitors stop at Indian Hot Springs, which features geothermal mineral pools inside a tropical-style dome.
Lastly, a trip to Idaho Springs wouldn’t be complete without stopping for pizza at Beau Jo’s, a Colorado favorite! Make sure to have the honey with your pizza crust 🙂
Explore the Mountain Town of Nederland, Colorado
About 45 minutes from Denver, and up past Boulder, Nederland is a quirky mountain town that feels completely different from the city. Known for its laid-back vibe, live music scene, and scenic mountain surroundings, it’s one of the best hidden gems near Denver for a quick getaway.
One of the most popular spots in town is Brainard Lake Recreation Area, where you’ll find alpine lakes, hiking trails, and incredible views of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. It’s especially beautiful in summer and fall.
Back in town, grab coffee, browse the small local shops, or enjoy a casual lunch before heading back to Denver.
If you visit in the winter, Nederland is also famous for hosting the quirky Frozen Dead Guy Days festival, one of Colorado’s most unusual annual events.
Discover the Historic Mountain Town of Georgetown, Colorado
Just 45 minutes west of Denver along I-70, Georgetown is one of Colorado’s most charming historic mountain towns. Often overshadowed by bigger ski destinations, it’s a quieter and more relaxed place to spend a day in the mountains.
The town dates back to Colorado’s silver mining boom, and today its historic downtown is filled with preserved Victorian buildings, small cafés, and local shops.
One of the most popular attractions is the scenic Georgetown Loop Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge train that winds through the mountains between Georgetown and Silver Plume.

If you’re looking for beautiful views or Instagram-worthy locations, Denver has plenty of scenic spots that locals love but many visitors overlook.
See the Best Skyline View at City Park
City Park offers one of the best views in Denver. From the park’s western edge, you’ll see downtown Denver framed by the Rocky Mountains in the background.
It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the mountains start to glow and the city lights turn on.
Visit the Colorful Murals in River North Art District
Known locally as RiNo, the River North Art District is famous for its massive street murals painted across warehouses and buildings.
Walking around the neighborhood is like exploring an open-air art gallery. The murals change frequently, so there’s always something new to discover.
RiNo is also one of the best areas in Denver for breweries, coffee shops, and nightlife.
Catch a Sunrise or Concert at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
Red Rocks is one of the most iconic places near Denver, but locals know it’s just as special when there isn’t a concert happening.
Many Denver residents come here early in the morning to hike the surrounding trails or watch the sunrise from the amphitheater.
You can also join morning yoga sessions on the amphitheater steps, which is one of the most unique workout settings in the country.
